As an outsider on the inside, Marisa has learned the ins and outs of the City and its departments. She will work to reform the City’s hiring process. We currently have a 20-percent vacancy rate in the City because we make it so difficult for people to qualify for the positions and for the departments to hire. We need people now, especially in the areas of public works and housing, so emergency appointments and same-day hires need to be allowed. And programs like Target Local Hire and Bridge to Jobs should be expanded. Marisa is also working to create a City Fellowship Program, which will recruit, educate, and train young people for City employment opportunities. If we create a better pipeline into City jobs and decrease our vacancy rate, the people of the City will immediately see a more effective government at work.
